In the past two days, we went from visiting historical sites to living current history related to the pandemic. Yesterday, with a positive omicron case among our group of 25 people, local health officials wanted us to quarantine in Wittenberg. It was possible that the whole group might need to quarantine for five days. Now it seems as if those whose PCR tests come back negative tomorrow - we are all as vaccinated as possible - will be able to resume some travels. We're using rapid tests, masks, and distancing to help prevent the spread. Our tour company is in close contact with health and civic officials so that everything can move forward in the best ways.
We've been blessed to be in a dorm-type living situation with great care, food, and service. Although it's tough to be limited to one building (which thankfully has an outdoor courtyard that we can use), I've re-framed my own thinking about these days as a "monastic retreat" experience, with the group gathering for morning and evening prayer and some class/discussion time (all on Zoom).
We don't exactly know what tomorrow will bring, but we are well cared for and staying safe. Those who have tested positive are in good hands while they recover here in Wittenberg. Challenges related to the pandemic were always possible and we're navigating them as best we can. This has been a great group amid uncertainties and challenges, and I'm thankful for them all. "God is our refuge and strength" (Ps. 46:1). I'll write again when it makes sense to write again. Until then, peace and love, and enjoy the picture of the half moon over Wittenberg that I can see from my window tonight (below).
